About

about

Hi, I’m Helen Eldershaw, Certified Practicing Speech Pathologist.

I have a huge passion for supporting children and teens with communication and learning. I graduated with a Bachelor of Health Science and Masters in Speech Pathology in 2016.

I have worked within 3 private practices as well as 8 different schools to date including both primary and secondary. I gained experience working with a diverse range of client presentations in private practice whilst my school experience gave me the opportunity to work in many different ways including consulting school leadership and presenting to staff teams on how Speech Pathology practice can be used in education.

I understand the value of communication and how supporting it in various ways allows children to thrive. I'm a firm believer that all children have unique strengths to offer the world and enjoy helping them discover those strengths while supporting their challenges.

I absolutely LOVE what I do, and I am dedicated providing an effective and individualised plan for every client.

One of my favourite parts of my work is breaking down speech pathology terminology into easy-to-understand language. I aim to educate and empower clients by explaining each step of the process.

How Does Speech Pathology Work?

what to expect

1. Initial Assessment

I will go over your concerns and relevant history through a discussion.

Some initial assessment will take place either formally with assessment tools or informally through observation and play.

4. Therapy

Therapy sessions involve engaging activities directed towards the child's goals.

Therapy can be conducted in the clinic, or within the child's environments such as school or home.

Caregivers are encouraged to attend to learn strategies and facilitate a collaborative program.

2. In-Depth Assessment

Some children may require additional assessment sessions depending on how many areas they need help with, and how much information is available.

Information may be collected from teachers or other therapists.

5. Home & School Practice

Home practice tasks or strategies are provided each session for caregivers or school staff to implement.

This is a crucial part of therapy and session time is allocated to reviewing, planning and sending out home practice tasks.

3. Goal Setting

All information is reviewed and tentative goals will be set

Caregiver priorities are discussed and included within goals

6. Goal Review

Approximately every 5-10 weeks, progress will be reviewed.

At this time the therapist and caregiver will determine next steps whether that be to adjust goals, set new goals, or be discharged from therapy.
